Perler Beads... I'm a fan.

These pictures were taken over the summer.  But in past couple of days, the perler beads have been pulled out again.  Actually, yesterday, Graham, (my oldest and most responsible child) accidentally dumped the whole bucket of them on the floor.  That was fun.  Luckily, Chris was home, so we just laughed.  Especially since I had just uttered the words, "Be careful you don't spill those."
I like them because for the most part, they aren't very messy... except when you spill all the beads on the floor.

I like them because they can be creative with the colors.

And they can make all different shapes.  I believe this creation turned into a wolf.

And even the youngest can do this.
They can make something fast enough that they don't lose interest.

And it has to be good for those small motor skills that sometimes boys lack.

These were Italian bullets that he ended up using with a sling shot he made out of a popsicle stick and a rubber band.  Boys and the strange things they think of.

You can get these at your local craft store for less than $10.
They also have them at Ikea.

It's been quite cold and rainy here.  And these have helped us pass the time until Daddy gets home on more than one occasion.

I love these, too, when they actually turn out right... but we always struggle with the whole wax paper/ ironing thing. It takes us a LONGGG time to get the beads to melt, and often times, the wax paper melts onto the beads and we can't get it off without pulling the beads apart. What is your secret? How do you get the beads to fuse together? In other words, what am I doing wrong? :-)

Katherine, use tracing paper, if you run out of the paper that comes with it. Works like a charm. I always have my iron on high and the paper never melts :)

I didn't realize you iron them--can you just make a creation and dump them back when you're done? Getting out the iron complicates my life, Sarah!

You could, Lori, but that wouldn't be very fun. I promise the ironing is not a big deal... it takes like 30 seconds. Easy. Easy.

Fun! And here's another idea I came across that seems fun to try with them... http://pinterest.com/pin/271975264966436976/

After the bazillionth time I cleaned up our gallon spills, they had to go. No laughs. ; ) They seemed to always be used for Polly Pocket and Lego Men Food-- or concessions for the Baseball Guys fans.
